Autism is one of the fastest-growing developmental conditions globally, yet it is often misunderstood.
Families travelling with autistic individuals are increasingly seeking tourism experiences where they feel comfortable and supported.
In this session led by the Centre of Advocacy & Public Education (CAPE) from St Andrew’s Autism Centre, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how individuals on the autism spectrum experience the world.
Through real-life stories, case studies and practical reflections, guides will learn:
• how autism may affect communication and behaviour
• how sensory environments impact autistic visitors
• how to create predictable and comfortable tour experiences
Participants will also explore real tourism scenarios — such as crowded attractions, sudden schedule changes, and sensory overload — and discuss how guides can respond with empathy and confidence.
This session provides valuable insights that help guides support not only autistic visitors, but also families and caregivers travelling with them.
• Understanding autism characteristics and common misconceptions
• Recognising sensory sensitivities and environmental triggers
• Communication strategies with autistic individuals
• Tourism case studies involving neurodivergent visitors
• Designing autism-friendly tour experiences
