Featured in JourneyWoman

What does exploring Kampong Glam look like for a wheelchair traveller? In JourneyWoman, Tanzila Khan shares her experience with Ludus Lab, discovering Haji Lane’s murals, Malay-Muslim heritage and the community stories that bring this Singapore neighbourhood to life.

What Makes Kampong Glam Special?

Kampong Glam’s streets reflect centuries of cultural exchange between Singapore, the Malay Archipelago and the Middle East. Names such as Baghdad Street, Muscat Street and Bussorah Street reveal the neighbourhood’s long-standing trading and cultural connections.

The district was historically home to Malay royalty, merchants, pilgrims and communities from across the region. Today, traditional businesses sit alongside independent boutiques, cafés and street art, giving Kampong Glam its distinctive blend of old and new.

Kampong Glam also carries a lesser-known link to the gem trade. The word “intan” means “diamond” in Malay, reflecting the area’s historical association with traders dealing in precious stones and jewellery. This adds another layer to the neighbourhood’s story as a crossroads of commerce, culture and craftsmanship.
